Sunset Seminar: Historic One-Design Class Boats of Penobscot Bay

July 7 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Presented by Alec Brainerd

Alison Langley

Co-founder of Rockport’s Artisan Boatworks, Alec Brainerd will discuss Penobscot Bay’s historic one-design class boats at 7:00 pm Wednesday, July 7, at Camden Yacht Club and streaming online.

Brainerd’s presentation will include stunning photographs of the various classic yachts, historic one-design and daysailers that Artisan Boatworks has built and restored over the past 20 years. Included will be the Camden Class Knockabout of 1915 and the Haj Class that raced at CYC from 1933 through the 1980s. The photographs are the work of well-known photographers Allison Langley, Benjamin Mendlowitz and Billy Black.

Brainerd grew up in Brooksville, Maine, sailing small boats across Penobscot Bay before GPS and cellphones. His sailing experiences include crewing on the 137-foot schooner Roseway in Camden and the USVI, countless deliveries and crewing aboard the 94-foot ketch Sumrun and winning the Atlantic Challenge Cup from New York to Falmouth, England. Before founding Artisan Boatworks with his wife Erin, he worked at Rockport Marine and with Rockport windjammer operator Nigel “Twig” Bower to build the 53-foot John Alden Schooner Heron.

Artisan Boatworks has grown to be one of the world’s premier yards for these classic wooden boats, and Brainerd will speak to the relevance of wood as construction material in 21st-century boats. He will be eager to answer audience questions concerning the care and feeding of wooden boats.

The 2021 Sunset Seminar Series runs from July 7 to August 25 on Wednesday nights at 7:00pm.
