Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program is hiring! There are part-time and full-time summer positions (including occasional evenings and weekends) available running from early/mid-June to mid/late-August, reporting to CAYSP’s Program Director. Sailing Instructors


Our instructors plan instructional and experiential activities to help every camper learn and enjoy boating in all its forms. At CAYSP, sensitive and dynamic leadership is necessary to provide youngsters the opportunity to grow, learn to positively relate to others, establish life-long values, and increase their appreciation of the natural world. To be a successful applicant, you must enjoy working with children of all backgrounds and be passionate about operating outdoors and engaging campers ages 5 – 17. With the support of management, you will plan a wide range of activities and programs throughout the summer.



Job Accountabilities


• Provide sailing instruction to children ages 5-17, with different levels of sailing instruction for different ages and experiences. 

• Introductory to intermediate sailing and seamanship instruction in the morning in Optimists, 420s, Sail Cubes, and Quests.

• Intermediate sailing in the afternoon with our 420s and Optis.

• Occasional weeknight club and community development activities.

• Occasional weekend Race Committee duties.

• General maintenance on boats and around the club when classes are not in session.







Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Dinghy sailing experience
  • One-years' experience instructing sailing activities with kids or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to operate a motorboat safely
  • Boating Safety Course certification
  • US Sailing Level 1 (CAYSP offers to partially compensate the cost of the course if certifying for the first time)
  • Current CPR & First Aid certifications (CAYSP offers a pro-bono course pre-season)

Competitive hourly wage depends on level of experience and relevant certifications.

Race Coach




CAYSP has a summer 2023 position open for race coach for our C420 and Opti race team. The team practices weekdays in Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay and travels to approximately 4-8 local and regional regattas during the season. Applicants must have a strong background in 420 racing and coaching. 





Job Accountabilities


• Lesson planning, training, and practice for a team of 4-12 students.

• Regatta preparation and support including travel to all regattas.

• Build and develop individual and team strategies, sailing, and racing skills.

• Fostering both Corinthian and team spirit, individual motivation, determination, self-sufficiency, and organization.

• Teach the importance of preparation and practice and regattas including optimal boat tuning.

•  Lead dynamic and purposeful sessions on the water that include effective land and water drills and daily debriefs.

• Facilitate individual and team goal setting.

• Encourage respectful and constructive relationships with students and their families. 



Required Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age
  • US Sailing Level 1 (Levels 2 and 3 preferred)
  • 420 racing experience
  • Two-year’s experience instructing sailing activities with kids or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to operate a motorboat safely
  • Boating Safety Course certification (OUPV/SixPack preferred)
  • Current CPR & First Aid certifications (CAYSP offers a pro-bono course pre-season)

Weekly requirements are typically Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:15pm, except when traveling to regional regattas. Overtime and travel expenses will be compensated. A driver's license and towing experience would be advantageous but not a requirement.

Land & Sea Instructor




Our Land & Sea instructors are charged with significant responsibility. Applicants should be adaptable and knowledgeable in general seamanship and have the skills to create and execute effective and fun lesson plans, maintain safe practices and above all, have a genuine passion for teaching kids. 






Job Accountabilities


• Independently responsible for the teaching and safety of up to six 8- to 13-year-old students on and off the water.

• Provide a supportive learning environment to help learners develop inner-strength, self-confidence, and technical skills.

• Give students the opportunity to learn and play in Camden Harbor and surrounding coastal islands while focusing on team building and STEAM activities such as navigation, marine ecology, anchoring, knot tying, arts-and-crafts, tides, seamanship, maneuvering boats, plant identification, scavenger hunts, etc.  






Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Two-year’s experience teaching students in any capacity (Teaching License and/or US Sailing Level 1 preferred)
  • OUPV/SixPack
  • Current CPR & First Aid certifications (CAYSP offers a pro-bono course pre-season)

Competitive hourly wage depends on level of experience and relevant certifications.
