Cruising Penobscot Bay

2023 CYC/RBC Long Cruise to Nova Scotia

August 5 – August 23, 2023

Mark and Louisa Van Baalen will be leading the Club Cruise to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2023. The proposed dates are August 5 to August 23, governed by Fundy tides. The cruise this year will be open to both CYC and RBC sailors.

As always, the plan will offer many options, including the idea of two Divisions:

Division 1 takes the scenic route up and around Fundy, visiting quaint harbours, many of which we have previously visited.

Division 2 shortens the cruise appreciably, by suggesting an overnight sail direct to Nova Scotia. Rendezvous of these two fleets will take place in Shelburne, NS. One useful datapoint is that in 2008 Louisa and Mark sailed direct from Southwest Harbor to Shelburne, 26 hours.

There might be additional variations including crew changes in Nova Scotia. Crew members could take the CAT, high-speed ferry, from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth then catch a taxi/shuttle to Shelburne, Lunenburg or Halifax. This could work either going east to NS or returning to Maine. Many options…

Customs procedures have changed in Canada, so those who have not been there since prior to the pandemic will have some things to do. Finally, the most important action at this time is to get the dates on your calendar.

Below is a draft cruise itinerary. For those interested, please email Mark directly mvb@harvard.edu if you are interested. Mark will keep this group updated on any news, changes, documents, etc .as the date approaches.

Thanks Mark for your leadership on this outstanding cruise plan.
